Algebraic Concepts Course

Program
Algebraic Concepts is a two-year course offered through the Solebury School Math Enrichment Support Program (MESP) as an alternative to a traditional Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and Algebra II sequence. The curriculum is designed to strengthen fundamental algebraic skills and to increase mathematical confidence. It is intended for students with diagnosed math disabilities and students who have limited success in previous coursework. The course includes a standard class period plus a math lab which meets once per week and utilizes the facilities and resources of the MESP.

Algebraic Concepts Course I and II
(ACI and ACII)
These courses will engage students through a multisensory and multidimensional curriculum that will allow them to discover the fundamentals of algebra. Technology will be infused whenever appropriate. These courses fulfill the Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 pieces of the Math graduation requirement.

In these courses, students will be asked to:

  •           Demonstrate multiple ways to answer a question
  •          Complete daily homework and keep a timeline for longer projects
  •          Complete a math journal
  •          Work with technology whenever appropriate
  •          Purchase a TI-84 or TI-84+ calculator
  •          Organize their materials

Math and Science Curriculum Sequence
Due to the connection between math and science, the standard science sequence may be altered. This will be determined on an individual basis by the Heads of the Science and Mathematics departments along with the Director of Studies. However, while the sequence might be different, all students enrolled in the MEP must still complete all Science graduation requirements.

Accommodations
If determined to be necessary for student success, accommodations may be granted.

Possible accommodations include but are not limited to:

  •          Extended time on summative and formative assessments
  •          Multiple types of assessments, including verbal testing
  •          Private one on one tutoring (additional fee)
  •          Peer support in the Math Center (MATH CENTER HOURS)
  •          Access to Technology

Student Evaluation

  •          Students will be evaluated at the end of each trimester to assess computational and procedural fluency.
  •         Regular parent, teacher, and student conferences will be offered to bridge home and school success.

What Follows the Program?
Students who successfully complete ACI and ACII will move on to Geometry, thus fulfilling the graduation requirement for Mathematics

Cost
Due to the specialized instruction and extra support that students receive in the Algebraic Concepts courses, there is an extra fee for this program …………………………………………………….$4,500

Eligibility for Admission
This program is designed for 8th and 9th grade students. Student eligibility for this program will be determined by their application materials including their standardized test scores, previous grades, and teacher recommendations. An additional evaluation by Director of MEP may be required.
