Math Enrichment and Support Program

The Math Enrichment and Support Program (MESP) is a learning enrichment and support program which provides innovative resources and a nurturing environment to support the math curriculum at Solebury School.

This program includes three main components:

  • Algebraic Concepts Course I and II
  • Independent Study Program
  • Math Center

Algebraic Concepts Course I and II

This two-year math sequence is for students with math disabilities or significant difficulties with math. The curriculum is designed to strengthen fundamental algebraic skills and to increase mathematical confidence. To work on conquering the difficulty these students have with math and the anxiety that they often feel about it, the Algebraic Concepts sections are kept especially small (no more than six students). Completion of these courses along with Geometry fulfill Solebury's graduation requirement for mathematics.  Because of the unique staffing structure of these classes, there is a fee for this part of the program.

  • Students will discover the fundamentals of algebra through a multisensory and multidimensional type of curriculum.
  • By the end of the year, students in the program will have a stronger foundation in algebraic concepts. This foundation will include number sense, operations, analytical analysis, multi-step equations, problem solving, along with procedural and computational fluency.
  • Technology will be infused whenever appropriate.
  • Additional information and admission requirements provided on the Algebraic Concepts fact sheet.

Independent Study Program

The Independent Study Program is designed specifically for students at Solebury School who desire the chance to create their own curriculum and the course of interest is not offered by the math department. Students need to prepare a full written proposal of their independent study by July 1 for the upcoming academic year. Approval is granted through the Director of the MESP and the Director of Studies.

  • Students provide a written description of their course of study, assessments, and grading policy. After approval, students develop a learning plan and carry out the rigors of the coursework.
  • Possible classes include but are not limited to: Calculus III, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Business Math, Architecture, Fractals, etc.
  • Coursework is monitored by the Director of MESP.
  • The Director of Studies along with the College Guidance Counselor determine appropriate credit and course verification for transcript.

Math Center

The Math Center is a place for students to obtain additional support beyond the regular classroom teacher.

 Hours and availability:

  • Run by the Director of MESP along with peer-tutor support.
  • Open twice a day every day except Tuesday.
  • Appointments can be made in advance although walk-ins are welcomed.
  • PSAT/SAT/ACT preparation is available and designed to provide students an in-depth analysis of testing procedures, test layout, study skills, and quick tips.
  • One on One Tutoring available for students who have missed classroom material due to extended illness, family or medical leave, or mid-year admittance to Solebury School.
