Solebury School alumna Joyce Bulifant '56 visited Solebury School on November 4, 2017 and entertained students, parents, alumni, and staff with stories from her new memoir, My Four Hollywood Husbands — some sweet, some nostalgic, and some hilarious. The visit was a welcome stop on Joyce's book tour. She and husband Roger Perry also performed a few songs, and she took questions from the audience and photos with fans. She also signed copies of the book, which were on sale by Farley's Bookshop, co-sponsor of this special event. Joyce generously donated 50% of those sales to Solebury School's arts program.

"You are all so fortunate to be at Solebury," Joyce told the crowd. "Whether you are a student, parent, aunt, uncle or grandparent of someone at Solebury, you are very lucky. Solebury School changed my life."

It was in the 1950s as a young boarding student at Solebury that Joyce met James MacArthur '56, the first of her Hollywood husbands. Best known for his role as Danno on Hawaii Five-0, James was the son of Helen Hayes, "The First Lady of American Theater," and playwright Charles MacArthur.

After the event, Joyce and Roger joined the audience of our theater program's fall production, where she briefly spoke to the audience. "I had my first audition right on this stage," she said to applause.

About Her Memoir, My Four Hollywood Husbands
Joyce Bulifant has lived the "Hollywood life" for nearly seven decades, and through it, experienced what few outside the entertainment world can imagine. While following the path of her own successful career, she managed to navigate the choppy waters of four marriages to charismatic Hollywood men: Solebury School alumnus James MacArthur '56, who played Danno on Hawaii Five-0; Edward Mallory aka Dr. Bill Horton on Days of Our Lives; William Asher, the famous director-writer-producer of I Love Lucy, Bewitched, and the Beach Party movies. Her current husband Roger Perry starred in Star Trek and over 300 TV shows and films. He has also composed music for Barbra Streisand and Bing Crosby.

My Four Hollywood Husbands is a rare peek into what happens off the screen. It's a story of love, a lasting love that is woven through the fabric of the world of entertainment. It's also a story about perseverance and overcoming obstacles — and that happy endings are indeed possible.
