Meet Our Dance Staff

Teacher Rebecca Wilschutz, is a veteran high school and professional theatre director, producer, and choreographer. She has been involved in youth theater for the past 30 years, having been the Artistic Director for the Streetsboro Regional Theatre. Former students now appear on TV, Broadway tours and study in top conservatory programs across the country. She teaches dance, musical theatre and middle school drama at Solebury School, Musical Theatre Dance for the Bucks County Playhouse, and also choreographed a TV show Nickelodeon, Oliver, the Dog Who Sings! She is a former professional dancer and Ovations award-winning choreographer with a degree in Theatre Education from Hiram College.

In the introductory dance class, Dance Exploration, students learn a variety of dance styles and proper stretching techniques, including yoga and pilates. Students will receive instruction in ballet, tap, and jazz techniques and review various American dance styles. Choreography class is intended for advanced dancers and gives them the chance to teach beginning dancers while developing dance pieces for both beginners and also intermediate dancers. Master classes are also held with professional artists from New York City.

A more advanced Musical Theatre Dance Styles class focuses on Broadway choreographers, such as Bob Fosse, Gower Champion and Twyla Tharp, as well as some original Broadway choreography. To further expand the dance experience, a Swing Dance class introduces students to the art of dancing with a partner along with ariel tricks to the swing style of jazz music in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. The Swing Dance class is one of the most popular classes at Solebury, for both boys and girls!

For the 2016-2017 academic year, we're introducing African Drumming and Dance. Students will learn to play percussion instruments, such as a djembe, as we create a drum circle and learn tribal dances.

The jazz/hip-hop based Dance Team, an after-school activity, entertains at half-time during boys and girls basketball games, festivals in the community, and competes at regional dance competitions. Team members are encouraged to design their own choreography to perform. Rebecca is excited to work with such talented students at Solebury.

Rebecca also coaches the dance and musical theater students as they prepare for their college auditions and summer program auditions. Her students have been admitted to The University of Michigan, Hartt Conservatory, Philadelphia School for the Arts, New York University, Pace University, Muhlenberg College, and many others.

Rebecca also directs Solebury School's StarCatchers Summer Theater Camp.
