Baseball

(SPRING) Varsity boys team plays about 15-18 games in a season and competes against private and local public schools. This team participates in the Penn-Jersey Athletic Conference.

Boys Basketball

(WINTER) Varsity and Junior Varsity teams play a very strong independent schedule with approximately 20-22 games in a season against top private and public schools in the area as well as occasional games with teams from New York or Washington, D.C. The team does not participate in the Penn-Jersey Conference.

Girls Basketball

(WINTER) Varsity and Junior Varsity teams play approximately 18-20 games in a season. The girls team participates in the Penn-Jersey Athletic Conference and plays a strong out-of-conference schedule against local private schools.

Cross Country

(FALL) This is a co-ed activity with varsity competition within the Penn-Jersey Athletic Conference as well as against other local private schools. The team also enters several of the region’s top meets.

Dance Team

(Fall and Winter) The dance team works on technique and choreographs and practices several routines to perform during the winter sports’ home games. This activity is open to all students regardless of their dance ability or experience.

Field Hockey

(FALL) The Girls Varsity Field Hockey team plays about 14-16 games in a season. Competition is against private and local public schools. This team does not play in a conference.

Fitness and Weight Training

(FALL & WINTER) Working with a faculty member, students develop a fitness program appropriate for them. Using the fitness room in our athletic center, students have access to free weights, universal machines, treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical trainers, and resistance and balance equipment.

Flamenco Dancing

(FALL & SPRING) Flamenco dance is an art form from Spain that has traditionally been taught informally generation to generation within families. Flamenco at Solebury will introduce students to the attitude, movement, and footwork for dance choreography. Performance of this choreography is encouraged. Students will gain confidence, strength, and flexibility, and do not need prior dance experience.

Golf

(Spring) The Varsity Golf team practices on campus and at a local driving range to prepare for their matches against both local public and private schools. Home matches are held at nearby Heron Glen golf course. The team has approximately 8 matches a season.

Horseback Riding

(FALL, WINTER, SPRING) Solebury's riding facility is located at the West End Farm, less than two miles from campus. Transportation is provided. Wendy McCook, a 1965 Solebury School graduate, owns the horseback riding facility. The program provides several levels of instruction in the American System of riding and allows room for the pleasure rider and the more serious rider to advance and improve. This program has been part of Solebury’s offerings for approximately two decades. Two options are available: The first allows students already owning horses to ride them in the afternoon. The second offers the beginner riding instruction from West End Farm. Option two has an additional fee per trimester.

Girls Lacrosse

(SPRING) The girls lacrosse team plays about 8-10 games in a season. Competition is against private and local public schools. This team does not play in a conference.

Literary Magazine

(WINTER) The Solebury Literary Arts Magazine (SLAM), is produced mainly by student editors and is published once a year. These student editors along with a faculty advisor produce the magazine. Other editors may work part-time on the magazine as their schedules allow. The magazine contains poetry, short fiction, and art submitted by students and faculty.

Newspaper

(FALL, WINTER) The Scribe is the Solebury School newspaper written by students for students. Students will learn to research and write news stories, reviews, personal profiles, and editorials, design and develop the layout, and produce the newspaper.

Outdoor Club

(SPRING) This activity centers on noncompetitive outdoor activities including biking, hiking, and canoeing. Spring is a great time to explore the backcountry. Participants must have a multi-gear road bicycle in good working order and a helmet. All levels of outdoor experience are encouraged to participate.

Power Lifting

(Fall) This activity focuses specifically on increasing upper and lower body muscle strength with an eye towards preparing to compete at a higher level in athletics.

Recreational Golf

(FALL) This coed activity is perfect for both the avid golfer looking to take a few strokes off his or her score, and the beginning golfer developing his or her basic skills. Students will practice on campus, at a driving range, and at a local course. There is limited sign up (9 golfers) and golf clubs are required. An additional fee is required for this activity.

Recreation Tennis

(FALL) Good for either the novice player or the varsity athlete trying to keep his or her game sharp in the offseason, this activity will provide instruction in mechanics and strategy through a combination of drills and matches among the students.

Rock Climbing

(FALL, WINTER) In the fall, students climb at nearby Ralph Stover Park which has some of the best climbing in the region. In the winter, students climb indoors at the Doylestown Rock Gym. Beginners as well as advanced climbers are welcome to join this activity.

Theater

(FALL, WINTER, SPRING) Solebury puts on three productions a year – dramas or comedies in the fall and spring and a musical production in the winter. There are opportunities for students with a significant interest in theater to help student direct a production.

Theater Tech

(Fall, Winter, Spring) Students learn to work with light and sound, to design and build a set from scratch in our black box theater, and to manage a stage. No experience with tech work is necessary for this activity.

Track and Field

(SPRING) This co-ed Varsity team competes in the Penn-Jersey league. Several of the athletes will also participate in the state meet and the Penn Relays.

Walking Club

This co-ed activity is a great way for students to get some exercise and spend some time with their peers in a non-competitive setting. Most days, we’ll walk on the towpath that goes along the Delaware River right near campus. This is a lovely and safe path where no cars are allowed. Over the course of the trimester, the club usually walks approximately 75 miles.

Winter Running

(Winter) This co-ed activity is perfect for both the student interested in a non-competitive way to stay in shape (and be outside) during the long winter months as well as the student who wants to prepare for spring track season. Runs on the paths around campus and on the track provide a variety of safe and fun routes.

Wrestling

(FALL) The wrestling team will compete in approximately 10 matches and several tournaments during the season. Competition is against regional private and public schools.

Yearbook

(FALL, WINTER) Students learn graphic design and book layout as well as developing their abilities to take and edit photos. Previous knowledge of photography and computers is helpful, but not required.

Yoga

(Fall/Winter) This co-ed activity will provide students with a great way to limber up, strengthen their bodies, and stay in shape. In addition to practicing poses, students will work on breathing techniques and meditation.
