As part of our international exchange program, Solebury will be beginning an exchange program with the Helmuth Huebener School in Hamburg, Germany, similar to our very successful exchange this past school year with the St. Christophe School in France. In April 2013, ten students and their teacher, Anne Mehler, will be coming to Solebury, and we are now inviting Solebury students to sign up for a 10 day trip to Hamburg from March 15 to March 25. William Collier and Christine Le Gall, both of whom speak German, will be leading the trip.
Why Hamburg? It is one of the largest and greenest of German cities, with a great deal to offer, from the very old to the cutting edge.
Why Helmuth Huebener School? Christine has run an exchange program with the Huebener Schule in the past when she was teaching in France. Christine has had great experiences with the school and believes it will be a great match for Solebury students.
What if my child does not know German? Kein Problem. No problem. All of the students at Huebener have been studying English since the age of five, and host parents will also speak English.
What will we do there? We will explore Hamburg, its architectural and historical landmarks, its famous harbor; we will spend a day at school where we will attend classes; we will take a trip to the Baltic sea, visit Luebeck, and travel to Berlin. Our week in Germany will allow us to develop new friendships, give us a different historical perspective on Germany, give us insights in the many ways the Germanys protect their environment, and provide us with a perspective on cities as well as farming and fishermen villages. From learning how to use the U-Bahn and the S-Bahn to dipping our toes in the Baltic Sea, our experience will be varied and exciting!
This trip is open to all Solebury students. We have room for ten. We will try to match up our students as best we can with ten German students for homestays.
Do we have to host a German student in return? That would be great but is not required.
