Trips

Each year, several Solebury School teachers arrange exciting trips both abroad and within the United States to help broaden our students’ worldviews. The trips are usually planned to coincide with the shorter winter break and spring break.

"The trips to Quebec and France were great experiences. They were opportunities I never imagined having! Seeing the Eiffel Tower and interacting with French people expanded my enjoyment for the French culture and enhanced my use of the language. Quebec, though cold and snowy, was so much fun. The Winter Carnival was incredible! The food, the culture, and the experiences I had with friends on both of these trips made them memories I’ll never forget."

Over Spring Break 2014, Solebury School will return to Masseube, France, with a group of fourteen students.

This trip includes three days in Paris!!!!

Over Spring Break 2014, Solebury School will return to Masseube, France, with a group of fourteen students. We will leave on March 14 and return on March 24, 2014. This is an established Exchange Program with our partner school Campus Saint-Christophe, located in the South of France, near Toulouse. Fourteen French students will come and visit Solebury School from November 4 to November 11, 2013. Our American students will spend three days in Paris, then a week at Campus Saint-Christophe, where they will stay in the dorms with their French friends, attend classes and visit the area. We wish for our students to be totally immersed in French culture and language for an unforgettable ten days. We are confident that, as they did last year, our Solebury students will develop long-lasting friendships with their French hosts.

We have room for fourteen students ONLY. We will give priority to students who have taken French and who will host a French student in November. (an exception will be made for boarders). All applications will be reviewed prior to acceptance into the program. Click here for form.

  • Spanish Language and Community Service Trip to Nicaragua 2013-14

Building upon last year’s successful trip, William Collier and Christine Le Gall will be leading a nine day trip to Nicaragua, Dec. 27 to Jan. 5. (Dates may change slightly depending on air fare.) Our goal is to provide students with an intense immersion experience in Spanish language and Nicaraguan culture, along with meaningful community service work. We will be working with the Spanish language school and community outreach center, La Mariposa, and staying in the neighborhood of San Caralampio where we stayed last year and made great friends!!! La Mariposa is located in the pueblo of La Concepción. Please check out La Mariposa’s website, which has a lot of information about its programs. http://mariposaspanishschool.com/

For the first part of our stay, we will be at La Mariposa’s Learning Center, El Piscacho, and then we will move into homestays. William and Christine will be in San Caralampio for two weeks in June, arranging the community service program and meeting with the home stay families. In all cases, we will work with local people who will help us with our Spanish. During the week in Nicaragua, we will also be spending a day at El Nisperal, an organic coffee plantation and research center. http://nisperal.org/ The December-January dates will allow us to take part in the harvest.

We do not have an exact price for the trip yet, but as La Mariposa is a non-profit organization, we are sure that we can keep the cost of the trip very reasonable.

The trip is open to upper school students. Please apply early. Students who do not speak Spanish will be considered. Click here for form.

Deadline to sign up for the trip is Monday, May 13. If you have any questions, please contact William Collier at williamc@solebury.org

  • Exchange Trip to Hamburg, Germany, March 2013.

As part of our international exchange program, Solebury will be beginning an exchange program with the Helmuth Huebener School in Hamburg, Germany, similar to our very successful exchange this past school year with the St. Christophe School in France. In April 2013, ten students and their teacher, Anne Mehler, will be coming to Solebury, and we are now inviting Solebury students to sign up for a 10 day trip to Hamburg from March 15 to March 25. William Collier and Christine Le Gall, both of whom speak German, will be leading the trip.

Why Hamburg? It is one of the largest and greenest of German cities, with a great deal to offer, from the very old to the cutting edge.

Why Helmuth Huebener School? Christine has run an exchange program with the Huebener Schule in the past when she was teaching in France. Christine has had great experiences with the school and believes it will be a great match for Solebury students.

What if my child does not know German? Kein Problem. No problem. All of the students at Huebener have been studying English since the age of five, and host parents will also speak English.

What will we do there? We will explore Hamburg, its architectural and historical landmarks, its famous harbor; we will spend a day at school where we will attend classes; we will take a trip to the Baltic sea, visit Luebeck, and travel to Berlin. Our week in Germany will allow us to develop new friendships, give us a different historical perspective on Germany, give us insights in the many ways the Germanys protect their environment, and provide us with a perspective on cities as well as farming and fishermen villages. From learning how to use the U-Bahn and the S-Bahn to dipping our toes in the Baltic Sea, our experience will be varied and exciting!

This trip is open to all Solebury students. We have room for ten. We will try to match up our students as best we can with ten German students for homestays.

Do we have to host a German student in return? That would be great but is not required.

Questions? Contact Christine Le Gall or William Collier
