Director of Learning Skills, Division Head

Solebury School seeks a dedicated and experienced person to serve in a full-time, school year position as our Director of Learning Skills, Division Head. This position is responsible for both supporting a range of learners, particularly those with mild to moderate learning differences, as well as leading the Learning Skills Department and its staff. Reports directly to the Associate Head of School and works closely with all faculty, as well as the Admissions Department. On-campus housing may be available (dependent on a housing vacancy), but is not mandatory.

Qualifications

Educational background

Required:

  • Masters in Reading/Learning Disabilities or similar
  • 5 years demonstrated experience teaching Reading to students with learning disabilities
  • Experience reading and interpreting psycho-educational testing


Preferred:

  • Supervisory (Reading/LD) experience
  • Independent school experience
  • Evidence of ongoing education in the field
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with parents and teachers
  • Calming manner to work with anxious parents


Physical Requirements

    Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

Principal Functions

  • Represent department needs and viewpoint to internal community in a variety of settings:
    • Faculty Meetings
    • Administrative Group meetings
    • Department Heads meetings
    • Admissions Meetings when potential LS or Bridge student discussed
  • Evaluate applications for admissibility and potential need of special programs
  • Represent Solebury School’s Learning Skills department as needed throughout the admissions cycle
  • Manage staffing needs as Learning Skills and Bridge enrollment fluctuates
  • Supervise Bridge Coordinator
  • Staff interaction/oversight/mentoring/evaluation
  • Manage yearly budget
  • Oversee opening and ending student testing
  • Assign students to appropriate LS teacher
  • Recognize and anticipate general educational trends and student needs, particularly as to how they may affect our current student body
  • Provide general classroom teachers support on working with students with learning differences and/or disabilities
  • Organize and run weekly department meetings
  • Attend and sometimes run parent meetings when concerns are raised about the program, student success, or student/teacher match
  • Teach 5 students when possible to allow time for administrative duties
  • Same expectations as other teachers in LS:
    • Testing at start and end of year, and as needed
    • Produce detailed narrative reports and grades every trimester
    • Extensive communication with parents
    • Extensive communication with general classroom teachers of your specific students
    • Individualized plan development
    • Communication with other LS teachers to share information and advice
    • Student advocacy while pushing to change longstanding habits
