Grounds Maintenance / General Maintenance Worker

Solebury School seeks a Grounds Coordinator with the Maintenance Department. Highly qualified candidates should be able to perform grounds-keeping tasks that ensure the upkeep of school property, as well as a wide variety of other maintenance tasks to support school operations. This position shares on-call responsibilities with other members of the maintenance department. This is a full time, yearly position and starts immediately.

Essential Functions:
  • Coordinates and performs grounds maintenance activities, i.e., cutting, mowing, weeding, edging, blowing, planting foliage
  • Provide snow removal as needed
  • Works closely with the Director of Athletics to make sure the fields are in the proper condition for upcoming events, advising rest of the maintenance team of items to be completed
  • Performs shrubbery and tree maintenance activities, i.e., pruning limbs, shaping hedges, cutting branches
  • Performs structural maintenance activities, i.e., painting playground and field equipment, repairing fences and gates, preparing athletic fields
  • Operates various tractors and lawn mowing equipment, electric, gas and manually powered tools and equipment, i.e., saws, sprayers, air compressors, mowers, blowers, weed-eaters, hedge trimmers
  • Performs regular preventive maintenance and cleaning of equipment used; makes repairs within the scope of abilities
  • Performs cleanup and worksite restoration activities, i.e., picking up litter, disposing of waste and debris, cleaning surfaces
  • Performs and assists with the maintenance and repairs of buildings and equipment, and other work as requested, whether involving mechanical, simple electrical, woodwork, plumbing or cleaning tasks
  • Responds to and takes appropriate actions in event of emergency or incidents to resolve, confine or prevent potentially injurious or hazardous conditions
  • During cooler months, will work with Custodial Team as needed
  • Share on-call time with the facilities team
  • Performs various additional tasks as requested by Director of Facilities

Qualifications
  • Positive attitude and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to work as a team member
  • Experience and aptitude with mechanical, electrical, plumbing tasks and/or willingness to learn and increase capabilities
  • Experience and aptitude with computer programs generally and willingness to learn and increase capabilities to help manage the school’s facilities’ software
  • High school diploma or GED is preferred and previously related experience
  • Operate standard vehicles and groundskeeping equipment
  • Apply common sense understanding and to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
  • Ascertain which people may need immediate assistance and to act accordingly
  • Ability to perform basic first aid
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment
  • Knowledge of O.S.H.A. requirements and the ability to routinely follow those guidelines and requirements
 
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
  • Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials weighing 20 to 50 pounds; may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Tasks are regularly performed with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as strong odors, fumes, dusts, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, disease, pathogenic substances and toxic/poisonous agents.
