Reports To: Director of Facilities

Solebury School seeks an experienced Groundskeeper to perform building maintenance, custodial, grounds-keeping tasks, and general maintenance that ensure the upkeep of school property. This position starts immediately. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Grounds maintenance activities, i.e., cutting, mowing, weeding, edging, mulching, blowing, planting foliage, etc.  

  • Track sports schedules and prepare fields prior to sporting activities

  • Recommend and arrange for new plants as well as removal of old plants, as appropriate

  • Maintain the high level of aesthetics and first impressions of the campus

  • Request/order supplies as needed under the direction of the Director of Facilities

  • Work cooperatively with others to meet the school’s needs

  • Assist with snow removal including shoveling, running snowblowers and heavy snow removal equipment, and sharing on-call responsibilities with facilities team members

  • Pavement and asphalt maintenance activities

  • Structural maintenance activities

  • Cleanup and worksite restoration activities

  • Regular preventive maintenance and cleaning of equipment used; make repairs within the scope of abilities

  • Respond to and takes appropriate actions in the event of emergency or critical incidents to resolve, confine or prevent potentially injurious or hazardous conditions

  • Assist with special school functions including setups of chairs and tables, etc.

  • Assist custodial and maintenance department as needed

  • Perform additional tasks or duties on a temporary, short term or permanent basis, as requested by the Director of Facilities


  • High school diploma or GED

  • Minimum of three years of grounds keeping experience in the last eight years

  • Knowledge of proper grounds maintenance and plant material/care procedures

  • Operate standard custodial and groundskeeping equipment

  • Carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form, determining priority of tasks

  • Perform basic first aid

  • Communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment

  • Knowledge of O.S.H.A. requirements and the ability to routinely follow those guidelines and requirements

  • Pass a background check, and maintain a clean record throughout employment

  • Clean driver’s license and have the ability to drive vans as needed (non-CDL)

  • Work weekends as needed

  • Team player and willing to jump in and assist other facilities team members as needed

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Tasks involve the ability to exert physical effort in heavy work, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials weighing 20 to 50 pounds; may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials weighing up to 100 pounds

  • Tasks are regularly performed with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as strong odors, fumes, dusts, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, disease, pathogenic substances, and toxic/poisonous agents

Additional Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to pass a driver’s test in school van
  • Submission to full battery of background testing per PA state law
  • Must maintain reliable transportation with the abilities to get to the school during inclement weather
