Winter 2021 Trimester
January 14, 2021
After a healthy and successful return to campus this past fall, we are in fully virtual learning mode this winter trimester. While we continue to monitor the situation with the hope that it may improve, the rise in infection rates, coupled with inhospitable weather, has made it too risky for the time being to continue to bring the entire community together as we had in the fall. The highly restrictive layers of protection and the strict enforcement that would be required to attempt in-person learning would have made Solebury School almost unrecognizable to our staff and students. We are confident that our sacrifice this winter will be rewarded this spring when we can gather as a community on the blossoming campus and enjoy the spring trimester in person.
This year spring will come earlier than originally planned, as spring break will now run from last obligation on Thursday, February 25 through the start of classes on Tuesday, March 16, 2021. The winter trimester is the longest one of our school year, allowing for weather delays and disruptions. With remote learning, we can reclaim some of those days. Therefore, we are shifting our timing for spring break and start the spring trimester a bit earlier this year, with the goal of resuming hybrid (in-person and remote) learning at that time.
In the meantime, we have poured our energy into creating the best online education possible, bringing our boarding students back to campus for the winter trimester, and creating community building and sustaining moments for all of our students. Students have many opportunities for community activities and social interaction throughout the winter months. Athletics and after-school activities are continuing with student participation required. Virtual community activities such as cooking, mindfulness, Kahoot!, Among Us, and more are being hosted by faculty, staff, and students. In recognition of the challenges that COVID-19 can bring, we will provide ample opportunities for students to meet with our counselors one-on-one or in groups if needed. The schedule can be found here.
Flexibility and adaptability have been key this year as the environment changes. The plans and protocols adopted by Solebury School will continue to be thoroughly communicated and must be rigorously followed, and enforced, by all members of the Solebury community. Please check these webpages often for updates and participate in the informational Zoom calls that we offer—it’s worth stating that our plan will be a living document, with updates, additions, and evolutions as the situation evolves.
Thank you for being our partners in education.
