Geometric Concepts Course
Program
The curriculum is designed to strengthen fundamental algebraic and geometric skills and to increase mathematical confidence for students with diagnosed math disabilities and students who have limited success in previous coursework. This class period meets weekly during our regularly scheduled class block.
Geometric Concepts Course
Students will discover the fundamentals of geometry. They will be taught through a multi-sensory and multi-dimensional type of curriculum. Technology will be infused whenever appropriate. This course fulfills the graduation requirement for geometry.
In this course, students will be asked to:
- Demonstrate multiple ways to answer a question
- Complete daily homework and keep a timeline for longer projects
- Work with technology, including an online textbook
- Use an app to reinforce current concepts
- Demonstrate problem-solving skills using a TI calculator
- Draw, analyze and evaluate 2D and 3D figures
Student accommodations for MSP include:
- Extended time on summative and formative assessments
- Multiple types of assessments, including verbal testing
- Access to extended technology and related resources
- Color-coded notes
What Follows the Program?
By the end of the year, students in the program will have a stronger foundation in the second level of Geometric Concepts. This course also covers a wealth of areas on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American College Testing Program (ACT). Students will investigate the properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons and circles in a two- and three-dimensional plane. Inherent in the course is the development of critical thinking skills, logic and geometrical visualization. Algebraic material will be infused throughout the course where appropriate. Successful completion of Geometrics Concepts could lead to the fulfillment of the graduation requirement for mathematics or the final level of our graduation requirement, Algebraic Concepts II. It should be noted that successful completion of Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry, whether in the Math Support Program or mainstream, fulfill the graduation requirement of mathematics.
Eligibility for Admission
This program is available for prospective students entering geometry who require additional support or those currently enrolled in the Algebraic Concepts I class. Evaluation by the Admissions Committee will be the initial basis for eligibility. An additional evaluation by the Director of MSP may be encouraged. Please note: Due to the specialized instruction and extra support that students receive, there is an extra fee for this program.
