Writer-in-Residence

Write. Workshop. Grow.

An evening program for students and writers of different ages and experience levels, taught by renowned author and journalist Jonathan Miles

Solebury’s Writer-in-Residence Program offers an exclusive opportunity to develop your writing in a small college-level workshop led by a working literary novelist. Students and adult community members come together to write, read, discuss, and refine their work with the guidance of an accomplished author.

Why Join the Class

  • Learn from an acclaimed author. Receive editing and mentorship from a novelist and journalist whose work is published and read around the world.

  • Be challenged at a college level. Experience the rigor of a true writing workshop, with drafting, critique, and revision, while still in high school.

  • Finish what you start. Each course is designed to carry an idea all the way to a completed piece of writing.

The class is intentionally small, creating an environment where every writer’s voice is heard and there's room for meaningful feedback and guidance throughout the writing process.

This year’s Writer-in-Residence Program offers two evening courses.

Writer-in-Residence class

The class offers an exclusive opportunity for high-school students and adult community members to engage with their writing in a college-level workshop setting, and to have their work guided and edited by a working literary novelist. What Solebury School offers with this program is unique among independent schools, and is a tremendous asset to its community—parents, alums, faculty and staff, and others—as well as to its students. What Students Say

In freshman year I took Jonny's class as an aspiring novelist and English teacher. Over the course of my four years with him as my mentor, he has fostered my ambitions and created a space where they could expand, all the way to the end of two novels and countless short stories. His lessons and support helped me understand myself not only as a writer, but as a person. Workshopping in his class revealed to me aspects of my writing, and of myself, I'd never seen before. My time with him and in his class has led me to join the new Arts Concentration at Solebury as well as apply to and attend the Iowa Young Writers' Studio program this past summer. I am ever grateful to Jonny for the close work he's done with me, and I really hope that every member of the Solebury community, interested in any form of writing or not, will consider taking one of his classes.
